When an individual experiences stress, he or she can acquire several detrimental effects. Some may turn to substance abuse such as alcohol, drugs, and tobacco to conquer their stress. But instead of alleviating their stress and achieving a more relaxed state, these substances can optimize stress causing more problems. Moreover, they find it very difficult to sleep. Thus it makes them easily tired when doing their work and other activities. Sometimes, accidents happen because of not feeling well.

It is normal to feel and experience stress. Positive stress however keeps the person alert to avoid dangerous circumstances. Over 50 % of emotional disorders are frequently caused by untreated, chronic stress reactions.

When an individual is extremely stressed out, his or her heart beats speedily and even cause erratic heart beats in other people.  Generally, men in their late 30’s to middle 60’s are often affected. Heart muscles are stressed out making them vulnerable to heart attacks. Severe stress in women can result to psychotic disorders known as manic depression.
